2013 ACT Schools MTB Champs

Words by Liam Dooley.

I had a great time down in Canberra last week riding some awesome trails. Perfect conditions on Thursday and it was looking great for the race on Friday but a late night storm made the track pretty soggy, but after a couple of laps it was in prime condition for some fast times.

I didn’t have the best start for my team after getting caught up on the line in a bit of charge. I managed to gain some time on the fire trails and fought my way back to finish the lap in third for the senior boys teams. Every one In the team put in a great effort throughout the race as we fought to stay in the top three. At the halfway point we had dropped back to fourth but it was only seconds separating us from third.

As we approached the final laps we dropped back again to fifth and we knew it was going to be tough to get back. I went out for the second last lap and we were over a minute back from third. I managed to pull out my fastest lap of the day and narrowed the gap to around thirty seconds. We knew who we were chasing and our last rider went out and smashed himself to pull us back into the race and take third by two seconds. It was amazing that our whole team pulled out there fastest laps at the end even though they were tired. I guess it goes to show that if you’re motivated, you can make it happen.

At the end of the day there was only four seconds separating 3rd, 4th and 5th. Many of our other school teams managed to finish on the podium and a great day was had by all.
